I FI should attempt to write the story of Grand Rapids' remarkable growth in the past four decades, and in a futile effort to be original, should say nothing at all about the Furniture industry, my narrative would be as devoid of interest as a production of a popular play with the principal character of the piece eliminated from the cast. I have no desire to be original, and so perforce I must follow in the wake of other and more competent writers who have described the progress of this charming city in language more eloquent and picturesque than I can command, and devote the most of the space alloted to this article to a description of an enterprise which has grown within the memory of men still vigorous, from smallest beginnings to proportions which surpass the greatest anticipations of the pioneers in the Grand Rapids furniture trade. In every civilized country dealers in furniture are familiar with the high standard of excellence attained by the furniture makers of Grand Rapids, but owing to the fact that most of the large manufacturers sell exclusively to merchants, comparatively few, even in the United States who are not interested in its sale, have a knowledge of the magnitude of this industry as it is carried on in this city, which boasts a population of more than one hundred thousand.
