Dr. Wake, in the preface to his State of the Church and Clergy of England in their Councils, Synods, Convocations, -fays, that, upon_his firlt perufal ofdr. Attetbury's book, he faw fuch a fpirit of wrath and uncharitablenefs, accompanied with foch an affurance of the author's abilities for fuch an undertaking, as he had hardly ever met with in the like degree before._ He afterwards fays, In my examination of the Whole book, I find in it enough to commend the wit, though not the fpirit ofhim who wrote it. - To pay what is due even to an adverfary; it mufi be allowed, that Dr. Atterbury has done all, that a man of forward parts and a hearty zeal could do, to defend the canfo which he has efpoufed. And accordingly I have lhewn him, notwithftanding all his other endow ments, to have deluded the world witha mere Ro mance; and, from the one end of his difcourfe to the other, to have delivered a hifiory, not of what.
