BE IT REMEMBERED, That on the sixteenth day of November, in the thirty eighth year of the independence of the United States of America, A. D 1813, JAMES ROSS, of the said district, hath deposited in this office the title of a book, the right whereof he claims as proprietor in the words

following, to wit:

"Catechismus cœtus Westmonasteriensis Theologis Anglicis et Scoticis Compositus, in Usum Classicorum Discentium Civitatibus Americanis. Ja. Ross Humaniorum Literarum et Græcæ Linguæ Professore Accurante. Exemplar prioribus auctius et emendatius."

In conformity to the act of the congress of the United States, intituled, "An Act for the Encouragement of Learning, by securing the Copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies during the times therein mentioned."-And also to the act, entitled, "An Act spplementary to an act, entitled An Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the Copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies during the times therein mentioned," and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other prints."

PROEMIUM.

Catechismus Westmonasteriensis ab urbe Westmonasterio, quo nonaginta et septem Anglorum Theologi, cum nonnullis Scotorum legatis, congressi sunt, nomen accepit.

Καληχησις [Catechesis] Græcă dictio est κατηχεισθαι, quod est propriè insonāre, ita ut sõnus ēmissus rěděat ad eum, à quo est emissus; ab xa echo, quod notat sănum in convallibus, et montibus ēdītům. Metaphorice notat vīvā vēce aliquem instituere, et erudīre, et quidem compendiose, et elementaliter.

Doctrīna igitur Catēchētica à sono illo reciproco dīcitur, quia non tantùm est rudiōribus tradendă; verùm etiam ab iisdem exigenda et rěpětenda.

Synonymum vocabulum est Catechismus, à κατηχιζεσtai: quæ appellatio apud omnēs nationes familiarior est. Docentes Catechesin appellantur Catechete, et Catechista.

Discentes appellantur Catechumeni, etiam dicti fuerunt νεοφυλοι.

Catechesis est compendiosa præcipuorum capitum rěligiōnis Christianæ, ad vivam hominis Christiani in vita et in morte consolationem, doctrīna, vīva vōce tradită.

Paulus eam vocat υποτυπωσιν υγιαινοντων λόγων, exeinplar sanorum verborum. 2 Tim. i. 13.

Vocalis ante vocalem est brevis, e. g.-redeo.

Vocalis ante duas consõnās est longa,-ventus.

Diphthongi omnes sunt longa,

Monosyllăbă finītà vocali sunt longă,-ā, sē, dē.

Penultima Præteriti dissyllăbi est longa-vīdi. Penultima Supīni dissyllabi est longa, -vīsum.

Crementă a, e, o in verbis, longa, -amābăm. Crementa i in verbis breviatěgimus. Crementa u in verbis brevia sunt possumus. E ante-ram-rim-ro est breve, --texěrăm. E ante-ris et-re præsens est breve-teger-is-ě. E ante-ris et-re futūrŭm est longum,-teger-is-ě.
