Then the Sponfor holding the child in one arm, fhall Stretch out the other hand, and jay aloud, I renounce them all. And doft thou believe in the Holy Ghoft; The Holy Catholick Church; The communion of Saints; The remiffion of fins; The refurrection of the flesh; and everlasting life after death? L 2 And And the Sponfor lifting up the hand and eyes towards heaven, fhall answer, All this I ftedfaftly believe. Pr. Wilt thou obediently keep God's holy will and commandments, and walk in the fame all the days of thy life? And the Sponfor lifting up the hand and eyes towards heaven, fhall answer, I will. Then fhall the child be cloathed in a white garment, and the Priest fhall say, TA AKE this white garment for a token of the innocency, which by God's grace is given thee in the holy mystery of baptism, and for a sign whereby thou art admonished fo long as thou liveft, to give thy felf to innocence of living: And mayest thou bring it forth without spot before the tribunal of our Lord Jefus Chrift, and be a partaker of the rewards of holinefs and purity in the life everlastngi. Amen. Then fhall the child's Sponfor give it the kifs of peace, and the Priest fhall give it a little of the confecrated Milk and Honey, and fhall fay, BE thou admitted into the congregation of Chrift's flock, receive the kifs of peace, and taste of this Milk and Honey in token of thy fpiritual infancy, and of thy entrance into the true land of promife, the church; and mayeft thou at the last day enter into the land of eternal reft, the kingdom of heaven, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen. Then Then fhall the Sponfor in the name of the child fay aloud the Lord's prayer. OUR UR Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trefpaffes, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from the evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, one. and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Then fhall the Priest pronounce this Bleffing over the child. ALmighty God, the Father of Chrift his onlybegotten Son, give thee a body undefiled, a pure heart, and a watchful mind, knowledge without error, and the powerful influence of his Holy Spirit, that thou mayeft obtain and affuredly enjoy the truth, through his Chrift; by whom glory be to the Father in the Holy Ghoft, for ever and ever. Amen. Then fhall the Deacon say, Seeing now, dearly beloved, that this child is by Baptifm regenerate and grafted into the body of Chrift's church, let us give thanks unto Almighty God for thefe benefits, and with one accord make our prayers unto him, that this child may lead the reft of his life according to this beginning. Anfw. Lord, have mercy: We befeech thee to hear us, good Lord. Then fhall the Prieft fay, WE yield thee hearty thanks, moft merciful Father, for that it hath pleased thee to regene L 3 rate rate this infant with thy Holy Spirit, to receive him for thine own child by adoption, and to incorporate him into thy holy church. And humbly we befeech thee to grant, that he being dead unto fin, and living unto righteoufnefs, and being buried with Christ in his death, may crucify the old man, and utterly abolish the whole body of fin; and that as he is made partaker of the death of thy Son, he may alfo be partaker of his refurrection, fo that finally with the refidue of thy holy church, he may be an inheritour of thine everlafting kingdom, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Then fhall the Priest fay to the Sponfor this exhortation following. Orafmuch as this child hath promised by thee his furety, to renounce the devil and all his works, to believe in God and to ferve him; thou muft remember that it is thy part and duty to fee that this infant be taught, fo foon as he fhall be able to learn, what a folemn vow, promife, and profeffion he hath here made by thee. And that be may know these things the better, thou shalt call upon him to hear fermons; and chiefly thou shalt provide that he may learn the Creed, the Lord's prayer, and the ten Commandments, and all other things which a Chriftian ought to know and believe to his foul's health; and thou shalt use thy utmost endeavour that this child may be virtuously brought up to lead a godly and chriftian life; remembring always, that Baptism doth reprefent unto us our profeffion, which is to follow the example of our Saviour Chrift, and to be made like unto him; that as he died and rofe again for us, fo fhould we who are baptized, die from fin, and rise again unto righteoufnefs, teousness, continually mortifying all our evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding in all virtue and godliness of living. Then Shall the Deacon add, and fay, Thou art to take care, that this child be brought to the Bishop to be confirmed by him fo foon as conveniently may be. But if they who bring the infant to the church, do make fuch uncertain anfwers to the Priest's questions, as that it cannot appear that a lawful Prieft or Deacon did baptize the child with Water, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, then let the Priest baptize it according to the form before appointed for Publick Baptifm of Infants; except that at the dipping of the child in the Water, he shall use this form of words. IF this child is not already baptized, be N. the fervant of God is now baptized In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghoft. Amen |
