PREFACE

TO THE FIRST EDITION.

It is my endeavour in these pages to supply a desideratum which I have long felt in the tuition of pupils commencing Latin. I have never been able to meet with any work fit for the initiation of very young pupils in Latin construing. The books used are either far above their intellect, or are so unconnected in their sentences, that it is nearly impossible for the pupil to discover and apprehend their meaning.

The following Work, which has been constructed after much consideration of the powers of the juvenile mind, and of memory generally, takes for its chief principles-familiarity of the object mentioned, and continuity of idea. In the case of such words as 'rosa,'
