I think a person would enjoy this book for its form and amazing style of writing based on elements from Dante, even if you did not care about Hubert Aquin. Of course, that is unlikely, because Hubert Aquin is a fascinating author from the era of Expo 67, the 1976 Summer Olympics, and Rene Levesque and the Parti Quebecois, elected on a platform of separation from the rest of Canada. We are sad to not have Hubert Aquin around any more. He would have had some important things to say about our era. After reading this lengthy book, I feel like I have traveled with him through the wonder and awe of Aquin's life, which led inexorably toward his death, without his seeming to be able anything to stop it. Indeed, he seemed to hasten it, despite all the panic and despair of those around him trying to get him to stop his self-destructive drive.
